When I started coaching gymnastics fourteen years ago, I had no idea I would still be here today, raising a family, coaching and now operating my own gym. I first came to coaching in 1994 when my husband and I moved back to Spokane from Georgia after his departure from the military. I was working a full time job and my husband wanted to go to college. I decided to get another job working part time and I knew it had to be fun and physical because now my time at the gym working out was going to be diminished. I was a gymnast in high school, not a top athlete but I loved the sport and searched to find a job at a gymnastics club. After 5 years of coaching in a club and for District 81, I realized I would love to have my own gym, not realizing it would actually become a reality.
I found with me being a coach and having children, this allowed me to be at home with my children and yet I could bring them to the gym with me.
I started at a local club here is Spokane. While I was still instructing at the gym, I started coaching high school gymnastics for District 81 for five years and landed with Mead School District for six years, mean while still coaching in the club. I enjoy coaching high school. It is rewarding to bring a student into the program with little to no gymnastics experience and work with her for 2 ½ months and witness the growth and skills she developed and achieved in a short period of time.
I left the gym I was working at almost 5 years ago and was independently coaching my competitive team. I had been looking for a building for over a year, and praying the right building would come along with the ceilings high enough and all the equipment would fit. In November of 2004, a friend told me about a building that may work. I looked at it, found it was perfect. My family and I were to planning vacation to Disney World in Florida that following March. I sat down with them and told them, we can go on vacation or we can open a gym. You see the decision my family made. And here we are. We changed the building from a big space where they worked on the under carriage of tractors to a safe fun gymnastics environment for children to grow and nurture there passion for this sport.
Being a mother of three daughters’ many have asked if I am building my own gymnastics team and in a sense the answer could be yes. My daughters have been in and out of gymnastics and have taken on other sports as well. However, they all started in gymnastics which gave them a really good foundation and has helped them in the other sports they have sought out.
My philosophy for opening my doors to gymnastics is to enrich children’s lives through the sport of gymnastics. This sport is the basis for so many athletics to help with strength, flexibility, mobility, etc. More importantly, children learn confidence, build self esteem and learn to work with others in a physical atmosphere and they learn team unity which can carry then through any area of their lives.
Being a mom, a coach and a judge of gymnastics has been an incredible experience. I thirst for more knowledge to pass on to my athletes as I continue to coach, instruct and consult other coaches and athletes on physical, mental and emotional fitness and how it plays a key role in our every day lives. My hope and desire is for you to bring your children to our school of gymnastics where we teach and instruct with compassion praise and love. A place where you and your children will have a positive experience.
